Application form is one of the area which troubles candidates a lot and make them nervous right from beginning. However it’s not that hard in reality. PMI has tried to simplify the process by clearly segregating application process in various subsections and making it wizard based.
To fill up the online form, one has to register on PMI’s website. This registration is simple 3 step process which asks you to fill up basic information as name, contact information (email, address, phone number etc), professional information (Organization, title etc) and authentication information (user id, password and secrete question). Then after go to online application form and login. Click on ‘Apply for PMP credential’ and start the application filling process. You will now be taken to actual application form (huh, finally!!). This page shows 3 steps in the left navigation. This gets bit confusing here. These 2 steps are not to fill up the application but are the steps till you view your exam results. Only ‘Step 1: Application | Review Application Progress’ is the sep related to filling up online application. So let’s get started!!!
Step 1 in turn has 8 subsections to be filled before one can submit the application. Let’s go through each one of them
- Contact address – Applicant’s mailing address. By default gets fetched from the address specified while doing registration. There is option to edit the default address.
- Contact e-mail, phone – Applicant’s email and phone. By default gets fetched from e-mail and phone specified while doing registration. User can keep on adding email ids and phone numbers and choose one of them as preferred one.
- Attained education – The details of highest educational qualification that applicant holds. Provide the details of qualification which is completed at the time of filling up the application. DO NOT enter the details of education which you are still pursuing.
- Requirements – This subsection has 4 further sections.
- Overview – Read each and every word carefully. It explains eligibility criterion – Minimum 4500 hours (3 years) of project management experience spanning all 5 process groups and minimum 35 contact hours of formal education.
- Worksheet – Shows summary of PM experience in months and hours and of PM education in hours. After adding PM experience and PM education applicant can keep on looking a summary of how many hours/ months are required, how many have been qualified and how many are still needed at this section.
- PM experience – This is the most important as well as complex section of application process. Applicant has 24 odd fields to fill in for each project and 30 odd tasks to enter the process group wise experience in hours!! To worsen the experience, the user interface is not the best. Grid based hierarchical layout would have been a great help. However, there is a workaround (hurray 🙂 ). You can create the spreadsheet to fill in all projects, make decent use of formulae to sum up months and hours of experience. Once you are all set and satisfied with data in spreadsheet, just do the copy paste game! Refer to another blog of mine ‘PMP application form – PM experience section‘ for details.
- PM education – Click on ‘Add experience’ button. Add all the fields. Qualifying hours means hours relevant to PMI’s requirement of formal education. You can add multiple education item
- Optional information – As the heading suggests, it is not mandatory to fill in.
- Certificate – This is another very important section. You can specify what name you want to be printed on your certificate. This can very well be different from the name you have provided while doing registration and also from the name on your government provided identity card.
- Agreement – Read it carefully. DO NOT just click on ‘I agree’ checkbox and press next button. Once you have the PMP title, PMI expects you to be responsible professional adhering to PMI’s code of ethics and professional conduct. Do go through it (Opens well in Safari and Chrome).
- Review and submit – This section is the final section in the application process. Here PMI has provided a place for at a glance subsection wise review of entire application and is a great help for applicants. It also shows if there are zero hours in any of the process groups.
